Parts of roads leading to the ministry of Education and Sports head offices in Kampala were Monday blocked as First Lady Janet Museveni was being handed her new office.
President Yoweri Museveni recently named his wife as the new minister for Education and Sports, taking over from Ms Jessica Alupo, who was among the 35 ministers dropped from Cabinet.
Alupo lost her Katakwi District Woman MP seat in the February 2016 elections.
Parts of Parliament Avenue and King George VI Way were Monday morning closed, worsening traffic jam along Jinja road.
A section of journalists were also denied access with security reportedly clearing only government owned media houses to cover the event.
Since 2009, Ms Museveni, who recently retired as Ruhama MP has been Minister for Karamoja Affairs.
Ms Museveni’s Karamoja docket was given to former Works minister John Byabagambi.
In a June 23 internal memo, all to staff were advised, “ ….that in order to ensure security on that day [June 27], no staff members except the ministers (Ms Alupo and Ms Museveni) and PS/ES will be allowed to park in the parking lot. You are therefore advised to find parking elsewhere to avoid any inconveniences.”
“In the same vein, staff will not be allowed to enter the building with electronic gadgets namely; mobile phones, pads, laptops etc. All staff will be expected to deposit those gadgets at a desk that will be manned by security at the entrance on Ground Floor until after the ceremony,” the memo stated further.
