  • The result means Uganda can avoid tournament favourites South Africa in the semi-finals with a more favourable contest against either Madagascar or Botswana on the cards.

Ugandan football teams just love to play against Comoros, don’t they?
Remember the Farouk Miya goal that sent broke the jinx for Uganda to qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup in Gabon two years ago?

Well another moment of free-scoring spirits will go down in history as coach Ayub Khalifan’s team destroyed Comoros 20-0, to progress to the semi-finals as Group A leaders, at the ongoing Cosafa U-17 Women Championships in Mauritius yesterday. Uganda, joint top on four points prior to the match at Anjalay Stadium in Port Luis, needed a superior goal difference as Zambia were poised to match their result against the hosts.

The Young Copper Queens did so by beating Mauritius 8-0 but Khalifan’s strategy to go hunting for goals paid off as they quickly got off the blocks through Margaret Kunuhira’s goal in the third minute. The relentless Uganda went to the break leading 14-0 before completing the goal spree in the second half.

Khalifan’s decided to appoint striker Juliet Nalukenge as captain so she can lead by example and she seems to be repaying the faith with tonnes of goals and player of the match accolades.

Nalukenge was at it again leading with seven goals to match her tally from the two previous games against Zambia and Mauritius while Kunuhira (5), Fauzia Najjemba (4), Shakira Nyinagahirwa (3), Gillian Akadinda (1) were also among the goals too. The result means Uganda can avoid tournament favourites South Africa in the semi-finals with a more favourable contest against either Madagascar or Botswana on the cards.
