Kampala. As a player, Deo Sserwadda was an old fashioned defender known more for his grit and uncompromising style.
His early career as a coach at URA appeared to take a similar path such that there was a lot more skepticism when he was offered the SC Villa job close to a decade later. That stint lasted only seven games before the former Cranes international returned to coach Kyambogo in the Pepsi University Football League (UFL).
Given time and more support from the university administration, he finally landed Kyambogo their first
UFL title with a dramatic 3-2 penalty shootout victory over two-time winners Kampala University at Mandela National Stadium on Saturday.
While his side rode their luck at times, few would argue they were not deserved winners.
They became the first side to win the tournament unbeaten and while often playing on the front foot.
“We were not exceptional but today was our day. We were nervous at first but we then deserved to win because we created more chances but we were let down by poor finishing,” Sserwadda noted.
They were however slow out of the blocks on Saturday as KU scored first after Steven Epau turned a header past his goalkeeper.
But they gradually grew into the game with William Okello orchestrating play as they sought to erase memories of the 2014 finals loss to Mubs.
Emmanuel Mwesigwa replied with a header in the second half to finish off another flowing move before the game went into extra time.
He then got his second with a powerful shot that went in off the crossbar after creating space in the box.
But KU who were largely outnumbered in the stands by passionate Kyambogo fans, fought back through a David Omirambe diving header.
