Police kill UPDF soldier over robbery

KAMPALA. A Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier suspected of carrying out armed robberies in the city against mobile money agents has died after sustaining injuries in a shoot-out with police officers in Nakaseke District.
Corporal Kenneth Tindibweba was intercepted as he was fleeing back to Singo Military Training School in Nakaseke District.
Police spokesman, Mr Fred Enanga, said Cpl Tindibweba resisted arrest and then turned his rifle on the police officers, who shot back and killed him.

“The officers shot him in the legs. He succumbed to injuries three days later at Mulago hospital. We have arrested Ibra Mbabali, a boda boda rider who used to transport him during his operations. We are also hunting for Ali Kalanzi also the deceased's accomplices," Mr Enanga said.
This is the second soldier to be involved armed robbery in less than a month.
Late last month, Pte Kenneth Mugombesya was arrested in Kalagi township in Mukono District after he and four others mounted a roadblock around Kalagi and robbed commuters of their phones and money.

In the Cpl Tindibweba incident, Mr Enanga said the police recovered an AK47, 688 bullets, 14 phones, three identity cards belonging to his suspected victims, 25 phone battery cells and airtime worth Shs400000. Among the people suspected to have fallen victim of Tindibweba's racket include Juliet Nagawa, a mobile money agaent, who was robbed of Shs7m before he was killed, and Cpl Saddam Sekawa, who was attached to Luweero Police Station.
He said 16 cases of murder, aggravated robbery and robbery are being investigated against the trio. Eight of the cases were reported in Luweero District, six in Nangabo, Wakiso District and one in Mukono District and another in Makindye Division, Kampala City.
