KAMPALA- The hints might have been blurred but Mike Mutebi’s reign has been withering. The end of his time as KCCA coach was confirmed yesterday in a short unsigned statement posted on the club’s website.

The tell-tale signs have included an acrimonious relationship with the board, the club’s failure to replicate the earlier Caf Champions League and Confederations Cup exploits and a mixed start to the StarTimes Uganda Premier League 2020-21 season.

The club occupies the fourth slot on 27 points, nine behind leaders URA, ahead of tomorrow’s second round resumption. The split was termed as one by mutual consent while terminating his employment with immediate effect.

“The club, under his stewardship has attained three league titles, two Uganda Cups, four Super Cups and one Cecafa Club Cup over the last five years, making him the most successful manager in out history. We wish him well in his endeavours,” the statement reads in part.

Byekwaso star shines
Daily Monitor can reveal that the writing was on the wall, especially with his replacement Morley Byekwaso – hitherto his auxiliary and a former player, exceeding expectations with the Under-20 national team at Afcon tournament in Mauritania recently.

The nadir of Mutebi’s third spell as KCCA boss surfaced on the eve of the tense game with Express when he reportedly went bare knuckles with his assistants over squad selection.

“I don’t fear to be sacked,” retorted Mutebi whenever the media hinted on his fate.

Principled and always in control, Mutebi stepped on many toes at Lugogo and the high player turnover – over 80 signings in five years – put paid to his stay.

Seen by many as a doyen of local coaches, there have been calls from some corners that he returns to the national team set-up while rumours linking him to moneybags Vipers have never dried up.

For Byekwaso, stepping into the gigantic shoes of his master may prove a challenge and an opportunity to his budding coaching career.
